Reindeer in the fells

Lappish Handicraft Workshops in Levi

Step into the rich cultural heritage of Finnish Lapland and discover the art of traditional Sámi-inspired handicrafts. In this hands-on workshop, you will be introduced to the age-old techniques used to create beautiful and practical items from natural reindeer materials such as reindeer antler and leather.

The workshop is conducted by Hanne, born and raised in Kittilä with Skolt Sámi roots in North-East Lapland. Workshop takes place in Kittilä, about 20 min drive from Levi Village in Finnish Lapland. Transfers from Levi are included. It is also possible to book a private workshop to your cabin or villa.

Create Your Own Souvenir

Under expert guidance, participants will create their own small handcrafted souvenir to take home. No previous experience is required, and all materials and tools are provided.

Using ethically sourced reindeer antler and hide, you will explore traditional crafting methods while hearing stories about local customs, history, and everyday life in Lapland.

During the workshop you will also learn about the deep connection between the people of the North and the reindeer, an animal that has sustained life in the Arctic for centuries.

About Tunturiin Design

Tunturiin Design was going to be my retirement plan – a “Lappish Crafts Grandma” teaching visitors to Lapland about our heritage and culture. One day I thought – why wait, this is as good a time as any!

I have always had a deep interest in handicrafts and respect to those who preserve traditions for future generations. As it often happens, your heritage becomes more important the older you grow and my own interest in Sámi handicrafts didn’t arise until I was an adult and had just moved back to Lapland after university. I participated weekend courses and learned to make Luhkas and work with fur. I am still hoping to learn the art of weaving wool scarfs.

“Tunturiin” means “to the fells” – Tunturi is the symbol of the rugged arctic nature and often a sacred beacon in the endless wilderness of Lapland.

Private Workshops

It’s possible to book your own private workshop for your family and friends. If you don’t feel like leaving the comfort of your own cabin, the workshop can also be brought to you. All you need is a large dining table and enough seating for your group.
